San Diego is the eighth largest city in the United States and the second largest in California and is known for its mild year-round climate, natural deep-water harbor, extensive beaches and recent emergence as a healthcare and biotechnology development center.  San Diego was ranked as the 20th safest city in America. 

The city of San Diego is the seat of San Diego County and is the economic center of the region as well as the san Diego-Tijuana metropolitan area. 

The city of San Diego recognized 52 individual areas as Community Planning Areas. Within a given planning area there may be several distinct neighborhoods. Altogether the city contains more than 100 indentified neighborhoods. 

San Diego is one of the top ten best climates in the Farmers Almanac and is one of the two best summer climates in America as scored by the Weather Channel. 

Tourism is a major industry owing to the city’s climate, its beaches, and numerous tourist attractions, such as Balboa Park, Belmont amusement park, San Diego Zoo, San Diego Zoo Safari Park and Sea World. 

The National Football League’s San Diego Chargers play in Qualcomm Stadium and Major League Baseball’s San Diego Padres play at Petco Park.

The name of the beautiful valley of Poway is derived from the language of the Diegueno and Luiseno Indians who roamed the area for several hundred years before the Spaniards came. Traces of these Native Americas still remain. 

Even though Poway lies geographically in the middle of San Diego County, most consider its relative location as north county inland. Poway’s rural roots gave rise to its slogan ‘The City in the Country’. 

Poway is home to the Poway Unified School District, holding numerous records of high performance. 

There are several parks and reserves including Aubrey Park, Blue Sky Ecological Reserve, Old Poway Park, Starridge Park, Poway Community Park and Lake Poway as well as several hiking trails.  Poway is also home to the annual Poway Rodeo.

Rancho Bernardo

 

Rancho Bernardo is an upscale master-planned community in the northern hills of the city of San Diego.  The topography of Rancho Bernardo (RB) consists of canyons and rolling hills. It is a sprawling community, with shopping malls, golf courses and office parks. The community is located about 20 miles north of downtown San Diego.   

There is an annual carnival-type street fair, RB Alive!, during the summer. Rancho Bernardo is also home to the oldest operating winery in Southern California, the Bernardo Winery Established in 1889 and family owned and operated since 1927. 

The area is part of the Poway Unified School District

Scripps Ranch

 


Scripps Ranch is a community of San Diego in the northeastern part of the city. It is a bedroom community with a unique feature with its landscaping, which includes many mature eucalyptus trees that are most apparent along Pomerado Road.  Scripps Ranch was originally a 400 acre ranch owned by newspaper publisher E.W. Scripps. 

It is located east of Interstate 15 Notth of Marine Corps Air Station at Miramar, and South of Poway.  Miramar Reservoir is located within Scripps Ranch and offers recreational boating and fishing. 

The community town council sponsors the annual 4th of July parade, Spring community Fair, Community Volunteer Recognition Night, Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony and Community Clean-up. 

The community is served by the San Diego City Schools

Rancho Penasquitos

 

Rancho Penasquitos (PQ) is a community in the northeastern part of the city of San Diego. It is named after the first Spanish Land Grant in the County - Rancho de Los Penasquitos. Penasquitos means little cliffs in Spanish. It abuts Los Penasquitos Canyon Preserve – an open space preserve that offer hiking, biking and equestrian trails. 

Fiesta do los Penasquitos is a community street faire held the first Sunday in May. In horror of the  Fourth of July the Rancho Penasquitos Recreation Council sponsors a fireworks show, usually held on the 3rd

Rancho Penasquitos is in the Poway Unified School District.

Sabre Springs

 


Sabre Springs is a community of San Diego in the northeastern part of the city. It is bounded by the city limits of Poway on the east, Ted Williams Parkway on the north, Interstate 15 on the west, and the community of Scripps Ranch to the South.  Sabre Springs is bisected east-west by Poway Road. 

Sabre Springs Park is located east of the intersection of Sabre Springs Parkway and Evening Creek Drive South. It features two tot-lots and two Little League fields.  South Creek Park is located on Wickerbay Cove and is next to Creekside elementary School. It features a playground, Little League field and direct access to the Penasquitos Creek trail. 

Two trails run through Sabre Springs. One is located along Chicarita Creek and another along Penasquitos Creek.
